Montclair Bathroom Renovation
Fall 2010
The main design plan for the bathroom renovation was to keep it simple while letting a few details pop-out and be appealing to touch and sight. A lot of planning happened prior to installing the tile and was the most labor intensive. There are many custom-made details in the bathroom. The most apparent is the dropped-down, back-lit, aluminum perforated-screen ceiling with marbles above the shower. Random gaps in this screen ceiling produces shadows against the shower area as if under a canopy. A tubular sky light was installed and the diffuser is a piece of the playing marbles covered screen. There’s a niche opposite the shower for storage hidden by a sliding mirror door. The sink vanity was reconfigured and made into an infinity mirror with a vessel sink. The vanity mirror frame lifts up and is made up of tin metal ceiling cornices (ordered online) with handmade flower blooms at the corners of my own design. This is my first remodeling project and therefore a learning experience made fun by all the unique details. Ultimately, this bathroom is a gift to my awesome parents and I wanted it to be a happy and fun space.
Before and After (prior tile had been attached to drywall with mastic, new tile had to be attached correctly with mortar onto cement board)
The sink vanity becomes an infinity lamp when the lights go off.
